Lew Welch continues the narration of his life in these letters, written to his mother as well ashis friends and mentors during his times in San Francisco, Reno, the Trinity Alps country, and Marin County, until his disappearance in the Sierra Nevada foothills in 1971. Gary Snyder and Philip Whalen are his chief correspondents and their letters to him are also included here, as well as letters to Richard Brautigan, Magda Cregg, Kirby Doyle, Larry Eigner, Jack Kerouac, Jim Koller, Mary Norbert Korte, Joanne Kyger, David Meltzer, Charles Olson and William Carlos Williams, among others. This volume collects many of Welch's occasional poems, together with his two field journals, the draft of an essay and a poem on salmon fishing, and an account of the death of his pet cat Stanley. |
