| Illuminations from the real streets of San Francisco In conjunction with the San Francisco Public Library, devorah major the citys poet laureatemade a public appeal for poems that explored the realities of peoples lives in a city as tough and tragic as it is beautiful and exhilarating. Many of the poems were published in the San Francisco Chronicle; many more were displayed on the Librarys web site. This anthology collects the best poetry from the project, which aimed to make public the creative voices of the city that rarely have an opportunity to be heard. Some of the poems came from celebrated writers. But many others came from the citys neglected neighborhoods, far from the Victorian mansions pictured on postcards. Here are schoolchildren with fresh eyes, homeless people in the Tenderloin, disadvantaged teens in Job Corps programs, raging grannies protesting war at street rallies, and working people from every ethnicity and class sharing their perceptions and feelings. This cross-section mosaic of a big citys voices offers a passionately experienced response to city, nation, and the world. devorah major is an African American poet, novelist, essayist, and teacher. Among her books are Brown Glass Windows, Open Weave, street smarts, and Where River Meets Ocean. She is the Poet Laureate of San Francisco. |
